Security is something most people don’t take seriously enough.  You may be under the impression that you don’t have to put a lot of effort into your residential security–but the truth is far more complicated.  Security is seemingly unimportant until you really need it.  Unfortunately, there are a few myths and circulating deterrents that are simply not helpful.  If you really want to protect your home from burglars and thieves, make sure you aren’t falling for any of these false senses of security.

1. Fake Alarm Company Sign

It sounds like a great idea–display the alarm sign, even if you don’t have the system, and burglars will know not to approach.  While this may work in some cases, it’s not always foolproof.  A burglar may question its authenticity himself, or he could simply not care.  Regardless, without an actual alarm, you’re not doing much to protect yourself.

2. Leaving Lights on All Day

If you get home after the sun sets, you may end up leaving the living room light on all day long so your house isn’t dark when you arrive.  But burglars usually scope out their targets before they strike; that means they’ll see your light on, and know it’s an indicator that you aren’t home yet.  Instead, a home automation system can help turn on the lights when you need them at sunset.

3. Getting a Big Dog

Certain breeds that are intimidating might be banned within your neighborhood; it’s also common for bigger dogs to have gentle temperaments.  Even with their reputation, a friendly German Shepherd raised in a healthy home is probably not going to attack any intruder–and it’s even more unsafe if you’ve trained him not to bark.  Smaller dogs, however, will bark incessantly.  If you’re asleep, it could wake you up before the intruder enters your home.  And if you’re away, constant barking may alert neighbors that something is wrong, especially if you’re away for an extended period of time.
