Glass break sensors are exactly what they sound like–a type of alarm system that sounds when glass is broken.  For commercial purposes, a glass break sensor can be very useful; it’s likely that you might not hear a window break from across the building.  Also, windows can sometimes show access to expensive items such as computers or important files.  Therefore, it’s important to install glass break sensors for your business.  But, how do they work?  Read on to find out!

What Triggers Them?

Interestingly enough, glass break sensors are not triggered because of the vibrations of the break, or because of infrared interruptions like motion detectors.  They are actually triggered by the specific sound and frequency the glass makes when it shatters.  There are dual tech glass break detectors, which means they can tell the difference between glass breaking and very similar sounds, due to their ability to distinguish flex and audio frequencies.

Where Are They Placed?

Glass break sensors have a range of about 25 feet, so they can cover multiple windows.  Sound can be blocked by doors or walls, so this is something to consider, as you can only cover the room the sensors are in.  There are very specific instructions for every glass break sensor (which is why a professional should install them) but they are usually required to be on the opposite wall from the window, 6.5 feet in the air, and placed away from any air ducts or other alarms.  They shouldn’t be installed in noisy rooms, or on the same wall as the protected glass.

Why Install Them?

It’s always great to have as many security measures as possible for your business, but glass break sensors have a few particular benefits.  For one, they cannot be triggered by other noises, so there won’t be many false alarms.  Secondly, they can detect any kind of glass breaking, so you aren’t limited to a particular room.  Glass break sensors are a great addition to any business security system!
