Your alarm company has probably called, and should now be sending police on their way to your home. But that doesn’t mean your part in this ordeal is over.

It’s every homeowner’s nightmare–to come home after a night out or a day at work, only to find your alarm ringing shrilly and your window broken.  Your alarm company has probably called, and should now be sending police on their way to your home.  But that doesn’t mean your part in this ordeal is over.  In fact, there are a few steps you should immediately take once your home has been broken into.  To keep yourself safe, read over the following list and ensure that you’ve memorized it, so you know exactly what to do if your home is ever broken into.

1. Wait for Police

Your alarm company has already called the police and they are on their way; but you should never enter the home, even if you know you’ll be safe soon.  You need to wait for police to arrive on the scene before you even think about entering.  The thief could still be inside, and your safety is important!

2. Take Pictures

A security camera will most likely catch the profile of the intruder, so you can give this description to police.  Along with this profile, you’re going to want to walk around your home and take pictures of everything without disturbing anything.  Broken glass and damaged furniture should be looked at, in order to prove to insurance companies that your items were damaged or stolen.

3. File a Report and an Insurance Claim

The police will ask you to file a report so you don’t have to remember to do this.  Ensure that you’re being as thorough as possible when you fill this out!  Afterwards, you’re going to want to fill an insurance claim so you can cover all damages.  Remember, home theft is never your fault; leaving a door unlocked or a window open does not give anyone the right to enter your home!

4. Update Your Security

Are you without security footage?  Are you lacking an alarm entirely?  Updating your security to match today’s technology is probably the best way to help you take care of thieves.  With modern technology, you can catch the perpetrator easily, ensuring your safety and your home’s integrity.
